I am one of the lucky people on this earth who has truly found their calling- for me that is being a birth doula and a childbirth educator. It took me 37 years and my own experiences to land me here, but my gosh do I feel lucky!
My home (aka the mad house) is occupied by myself, my husband, James, son, Jack (5), daughter, Ashley (3) and of course, our first born Mack- the fur baby (Cavoodle).
I have always had a passion for helping people and get a great deal of satisfaction from feeling like I am making a difference. This satisfaction was gained through countless hours of volunteer work in my youth but even through minor but daily acts of kindness like talking to an elderly person sitting alone. I spent a lot of my career working for a fundraising agency who work with some of Australia's biggest and most reputable charities and am still closely affiliated with the business. Through all of this, I’ve known my calling is elsewhere. Like many others, I have pondered and wondered what path I can take with my career which will make a difference to others and “fill my cup up!”
Throughout my journey as a parent, it was painstakingly clear that there were gaps for me and those around me. A lot of those gaps were due to the lack of awareness and support. There is so much awareness of postpartum depression (PPD) and so many fantastic initiatives in place for parents experiencing PPD, but I felt more needed to be done before it got to that stage. Many parents are unaware of the extent of the journey they are about to embark on and when the time comes- it hits them. Parents to be, whether for the first time or fifth time, are smashed with information (some true, and a lot false) and “you should do’s” and “you shouldn’t do’s” it is simply overwhelming!
Parents to be need to have access to people that can give them the time of day by answering their questions, providing guidance and support and sharing evidence based knowledge with them which will help them on this massively transformative journey- that is my role as a doula and childbirth educator.
I share more detail about the services I offer in the Doula Support and the Childbirth Education sections of my website.
I am excited that you’ve landed here as it tells me that you’re a parent, parent to be, friend or family member who knows that expectant parents need and deserve more!
